Why is sex difficult after birth? I recently read a post from a midwife that I love saying that it is a myth that sex is painful after birth. Well most women do experience discomfort when having sex after giving birth. It’s true that sex “shouldn’t” be painful. However if it is, there is a reason for it, and it can be helped. And about 95% of women would say that sex is totally different for them after they become mothers- and that might be in many directions- for some it’s better, for some it’s worse, and for some it’s just different. Why, though? There are so many reasons. Difference in tone- both hypertoned (tight) or hypotoned (weak/disconnected) in muscles in the pelvic floor. You may have scar tissue that developed from the birth or from a preexisting injury. There may be stored emotion and trauma in your vagina from birth, even if it was a Csection. An earlier trauma may have been stirred up during the birth zeitgeist. You may have been tolerating certain dynamics in sex before you had a baby that you aren’t interested in anymore. You may feel a lack of confidence in your pelvic floor function (maybe you leak when you sneeze) and that transfers over to sharing that intimate space and trusting how your body is working. You may feel unaccustomed to your changing body. If sex feels challenging for you after you have become a mother, this is NORMAL. It’s also an opportunity to do things differently- to take stock of what you would like, and ask for that. It’s okay to say, “I want to be close, but we need to do sex differently now. I’m not sure what that means, but let’s figure it out together.” The person showing up into intimate space now is not the person she was before. Ladies! Just wanted to share some of my lifesavers. Raw carrots & @yogitea's women cycle tea are amazing hormone regulators for pms & time of the month (TOM). Did you know your body needs different nutrients in the different parts of your cycle? And especially closest to TOM, most women become really anemic & have some excess estrogen just chilling around (which is the cause of all the lovely pms symptoms we experience). Carrots bind with the excess estrogen and help detoxify your insides. It's kinda cool to be the expert on your body so start regulating & tracking & observing if you don't already. My favorite resource to understanding all of this is Dr. Northrups book "women's bodies, womens wisdom." I recommend it too.
