What about The Aeneid's author Virgil?
Virgil (70-19 BC) was essentially the chief Latin author of the Augustan Era. His most famous works include The Aeneid, Georgics, and Eclogues, the latter two being bucolic or pastoral poetry.
Virgil was commissioned by Emperor Augustus to write a Roman epic equivalent to Homer's. He had several motives for this. First, as he had won the Battle of Actium in Greece, the Greek lands were easily open to full Roman imperialism. By having a bright man such as Virgil create a Roman epic that connects with the Greek epics (stories that were pseudo-historical in those times), Augustus hoped to persuade the Greeks to "unify" with the Romans. Secondly, Augustus saw this poem as an opportunity to unify Rome itself, which had just undergone at least 50 years of perpetual civil war. Virgil quickly began working on this legendary task - one that would last eleven years and even take his own life.
The Aeneid was written in what is called dactylic hexameter. Ancient poetry was marked by its rhythm and phonetics rather than its rhyming. The proper reading of an epic such as The Aeneid gives it a chant-like feel, and these works would often be recited with instruments. My last two posts were more specific as far as the content of The Aeneid is concerned.
Unfortunately, Virgil was unable to finish The Aeneid. It "ends" rather abruptly: 'So saying, burning with rage, he buried his sword deep
in Turnus’s breast: and then Turnus’s limbs grew slack with death, and his life fled, with a moan, angrily, to the Shades' (XII:948-952). In fact, Virgil was so displeased with his work as he was on his deathbed that he ordered his servants to cast it into his fire and destroy it, but he was prevented from doing so by Augustus.
In the following post, I will go into Virgil's legacy, and I hope you all will enjoy it!
