I've been watching with a heavy heart and waiting with all others to hear about loved ones as we continue to see what happened to the island of my parents.
A few of my friends and I are first generation here in the States. We've watched as the island we were introduced to steadily declined and now this.
There's something weird though about being Puerto Rican. The island was always considered our home, the place to go back to connect with family and heritage. I think that's why you're seeing such high emotions through social media. We are a passionate people. Please be patient with us. It's hard to see the devastation because most of us visit our island so often. It's our home away from home.
This a bit of a wake up call for all of us. It's not just our parents' island but ours. Our blood and roots run deep. There's a rich culture and strong resiliency.
We all know we have to step it up now and for months ahead. This is our island too. I think some of us forgot that because our visits are brief. This is our opportunity to look longer term because I want my children and their children to experience the richness of our heritage. It's beautiful.
We are waiting to see how to get much needed resources to our families for a lengthy period of time.
But in the meantime, I know God has our families. I know our God is good.
