Day 4: Describe your platform.
My community service project is entitled, "Take Back Our Campus: Sexual Assault Education & Prevention." No one expects to be sexually assaulted - I certainly didn't. And according to the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN), every 98 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted. We all know someone who has been affected by sexual assault in some way. My hope is that through my platform, we can have open, honest conversations about sexual violence and how we can prevent it - and how we can support and protect survivors when we can't.
The topic of consent needs to be addressed much earlier; if we wait until students are in college, we are far too late. Sexual education programs in schools across the country need to be comprehensive and sustainable; we can't be afraid to talk about sexual assault any longer. It's affecting too many of us - too many of our friends, daughters, sons, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, cousins, nieces, nephews, grandchildren.
Having transparent conversations with today's youth is imperative in helping them understand respect, consent, and ways to intervene should they see a potentially dangerous situation unfold. And it's just as important to assist survivors, especially in the aftermath of an assault. Post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression, panic disorder, and disassociation are all common in the aftermath of an assault, and I'm familiar with each from personal experience. It's on us to believe and support survivors. It's on us to expect more from our campuses and school administrators. It's on us to intervene if we see a potentially dangerous situation in front of us. It's on us - all of us - to contribute in some way. Stopping the epidemic of sexual assault on ALL campuses, not just high schools, and to support survivors everywhere is on each and every one of us.
